Job hunting can be exhausting, but it doesn’t have to be!

Finding a job is a process that everyone will go through multiple times throughout their careers. The job search can be very unpredictable and can be stressful, but it doesn’t have to be. Take control of the process, and use these steps to help put yourself in the best position for success.

Set yourself up for success

Create a LinkedIn profile, resume, and cover letter and ensure that they are up to date. Ask friends, family, and colleagues for feedback and be open and inviting of their feedback. Prepare for interviews and develop an understanding of what the company does, and how you can help! Furthermore, if the process is taking a while, learn a new marketable skill. Try taking a few LinkedIn learning courses and be sure to add these to your resume and LinkedIn page. 

Network!

Did you know that between 50-80% of jobs are filled through networking (CNBC)? If not, well now you know! Networking might be the single most important component of the job search process. Develop and maintain quality relationships with those whom you’ve worked with in the past, and embrace and welcome meeting others.

Track and set goals

When going through this often tough and complicated process, it is critical that you have set goals and track what you've done along the way. Think through what you want to accomplish in the process more than just the ultimate goal of getting a job, and ensure that these set goals are SMART. Examples could be: applying to at least two jobs per week for the next two months, work on two marketable skills per month, and others. Furthermore, tracking where you’ve applied to, who you have heard back from, who you need to follow up with, and tracking whether you have connected is crucial. Research and Customize 

In the same way it's helpful to do your research before connecting with a potential investor, you should do your research on the company and customize reach outs, resume, cover letters, and interview responses. 

Why are you different?

Answer the question of what differentiates you from another candidate. Once you pin-down your differentiating asset, be sure to let the interviewer know. Stress this strength and help them understand why it is important and of value to them. Why will it give you an advantage in this role?

Go the extra mile

After an interview, follow up with the interviewer. Demonstrate your genuine interest in the company, and make sure they know what you can bring to the company. Prepare thoughtful questions beforehand that provide depth and breadth to interviews, and which can spark conversation. 

Embrace change

Keep an open mind throughout the process and be open for change. If an opportunity arises in a different field than you’re comfortable with, be inviting to change. You don’t know what you don’t know. Invite and embrace discomfort. With that being said, don’t settle. Understand your worth and don’t settle for something that you know won’t help you and your future career. 

Stay positive

Stay strong and know that there is light at the end of the tunnel. The job hunting process is dreaded for most, and that’s due to the uncertainty of the future. It’s human nature to feel uncomfortable not knowing what your future holds, but stay positive. Your search will come to a glorious end, and you will find the job that is meant for you.
